Brief Bio

Now I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. I am working at the Emotion Lab with Dr. Andreas Olsson. I hold a PhD in Education from the East China Normal University, China (supervisor: Professor Yi Hu) and a second PhD in Psychological Science and Education from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (supervisor: Professor Philippe Peigneux).

My research interests are in the areas of human social interactions. More specifically, my research focuses on how brain-to-brain coupling across individuals tracks (and underlies) cooperation, decision-making, learning, and other high-level social cognition. I use behavioral, electrophysiological (EEG, GSR), neuroimaging (fNIRS, MEG), and neuro-modulation (tACS) methods, combined with the interpersonal neuroscience approach, to investigate the neural mechanisms that mediate human social cognition.

News
  • [2021/07/22] New paper accepted in Journal of Educational Psychology! Congrats to all the co-authors. We found that instructor-learner brain synchronization during elaborated feedback predicted learning transfer.

  • [2021/07/21] Our paper was conditionally accepted for publication at Nature Communications!!! We found that national identity can predict public health support during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a great collaboration between 67 nations!

  • [2021/03/15] Now out in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience - "Mortality threat mitigates interpersonal competition: An EEG-based hyperscanning study". Mortality threat was found to alleviate competition within dyads, and this effect might be associated with gamma-band inter-brain synchronization.

  • [2021/03/12] Great news - our new paper "The interpersonal neuroscience of social learning" just accepted in Perspectives on Psychological Science! Nice work w/ Dr. Giacomo Novembre and Prof. Andreas Olsson.

  • [2020/09/20] "Social safety learning: Shared safety abolishes the recovery of learned threat", w/ Prof. Andreas Olsson and Dr. Armita Golkar, now out in Behaviour Research and Therapy.

  • [2020/06/21] "Interpersonal brain sycnhronization with instructor compensates for learner's sleep deprivation in interactive learning", supervised by Prof. Philippe Peigneux and Prof. Yi Hu. Data collected in Belgium. Now out in Biochemical Pharmocology.

  • [2020/06/13] We successfully organized Neurosync 2020, with the theme of "Interpersonal Neuroscience in the Social World". Twelve excellent speakers were invited. You can find most recorded videos here‍.

  • [2020/06/08] New collaboration with Dr. Giacomo Novembre - "Dual brain stimulation enhances interpersonal learning through spontaneous movement synchrony". Now out in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.

  • [2020/03/26] Just out! New review paper collaborated with Dr. Xiaojun Cheng: Two-person approaches to studying social interaction in psychiatry: Uses and clinical relevance, published in Frontiers in Psychiatry.

  • [2020/03/21] I presented my recent work in a fNIRS journal club run by Dr. Xu Cui. Presentation can be downloaded here.

  • [2020/02/15] Two papers accepted in NeuroImage: (1) Instructor-learner brain coupling discriminates betweeen instructional approaches and predicts learning; (2) The averaged inter- brain coherence between the audience and a violinist predicts the popularity of violin performance.

  • [2019/10/28] New work out in Brain Topography - Applications of functional near-infrared spectroscopy in fatigue, sleep deprivation, and social cognition. This is my first review paper!

  • [2019/09/27] New paper accpeted by Frontiers in Neuroscience -   Coordination elicits synchronous brain activity between co-actors: Frequency ratio matters. Congrats to Dr. Xiaojun Cheng!

  • [2019/08/20] Our new work 'Learning desire is predicted by similar neural processing of naturalistic educational materials' published in eNeuro was just featured on neuroscience news. See more details here.

  • [2019/07/22] Just accepted a postdoctoral offer from the Emotion Lab, Karolinska Institutet. Looking forward to my new journey in Sweden.

  • [2019/05/13] Just obtained double PhD from East China Normal University (China, supervisor: Prof. Yi Hu) and Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium, supervisor: Prof. Philippe Peigneux). My doctoral dissertation titled "Instructor-learner brain synchronization tracks interactive learning: Identification, modulation, and causation" won the Excellent Thesis! Well done, Dr. Pan :-)

  • [2018/09/28] New paper out in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging! In this work, we investigated the interpersonal brain synchronization during psychological counseling and its relationship with working alliance. Amazing!

  • [2018/08/03] New paper out in NeuroImage! You can find it in the Research section - "Interpersonal synchronization of inferior frontal cortices tracks social interactive learning of a song".

  • [2017/12/23] New paper out in Biological Psychology. We investigated the inter-brain synchrony and cooperation context in ineractive decision making.

  • [2017/10/14] New paper out in Social Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience. In this paper, we investigated how brain-to-brain synchronization predicted mutual prosociality.

  • [2017/09/21] I have arrived at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Belgium) as a joint PhD student. My new boss and collegues are very nice!

  • [2017/07/11]   New paper out in Brain and Cognition. We studied the neural dynamics in superior mnemonists. We found that P2 and theta power during encoding predict retrieval of digit memory in world-class superior mnemonists.

  • [2017/02/16] New paper out in Memory! We investigated the behavioral characteristics and memory skills in the Championship of World Memory Competition 2010 & 2011 - Feng Wang.
